The Vintage Picnic Book
Creating Memorable Meals Outdoors
By J.C. Jeremy Hobson
Although this is a book with a ‘vintage’ theme, it is, nevertheless, written very much with the modern-day picnicker in mind. Throughout history picnics have been popular at all levels; both as a practical way of feeding rural workers out in the countryside and as a leisure activity to share with family and friends in convivial surroundings. Many have written about their memories of picnics past as high-quality experiences; nostalgic tales that are redolent and characterful. Jeremy Hobson has captured and distilled these stories and images to give us the essence of the vintage picnic – the perfect location, the food that tastes somehow better in the open air, the relaxed and informal atmosphere, the accessories, the highs (and the lows!) of eating outside, away from home or even, sometimes, eating indoors in an unusual way.
Picnics remain as popular as ever. Glamorous or humble, a picnic allows everyone to participate in a traditional feast at many levels. Contributions might have always included egg or cucumber sandwiches, game pie and sausage rolls but, in this day and age, they are also likely to feature vegetarian options and imaginative delights totally unknown to the Victorian or Edwardian picnicker.
Historical, factual, informative – and very definitely quirky – The Vintage Picnic Book includes literary references, photographs and illustrations and, of course, scintillating ideas and recipes to ensure that every picnic is a memorable event, whether it is a sandwich in the park, a romantic meal in a discreet location, or a more raucous public occasion with friends. Whatever your goal, within these pages you’ll find all you need to know about preparing the perfect picnic and ensuring that it will be a vintage one – memorable, high quality, characterful and evocative – so that you too will have tales to tell of picnics past.

About the Author:
J. C. Jeremy Hobson nowadays lives in Hampshire and is of the opinion that, because of the county’s varied topography, wonderful countryside and proximity to coast and rivers, there’s never any problem in finding the ideal location for the perfect picnic; vintage or otherwise. A professional freelance writer, author and journalist for almost two decades, he has, nevertheless, written books and articles for far longer. His first published article appeared in 1976, and his first book ten years later. Jeremy’s subject matter is generally rural-based and, over the years, has written of field-sports, farming, smallholding, chicken-keeping, working dogs and his experiences of living in France. One of his latest titles is the much acclaimed The Dangerous Book for Grandads – the success of which Jeremy puts down to the fact that, even though now a grandad three times over, he’s never really grown up. An enthusiastic lover of red wine (a love seemingly explained by the fact that he lived in a strong French wine-growing region for 14 years), he avidly reads every article he can find that extols its health-giving and nutritional virtues and maintains that, if the authors are correct, he’ll live to be at least 100! |
